Pathways from "Take the Lead"

Girl Scout Pathways at a Glance

A girl can be a Girl Scout in many ways.  Girl Scout Pathways describe the options that allow girls to find the right opportunities that fit their interests, developmental needs, and schedules.  Even if a girl starts out in a troop, she may find that one of the shorter-term options works better for her as she gets older.  Here’s a quick review of pathways and what is available to Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.   For more information, contact your regional Girl Scout Center for more information.

All Girl Scout Pathways involve girls in activities that are girl-led, cooperative, and experiential where girls “learn by doing.”

Troop
The troop pathway offers the same group of girls the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, usually over a span of nine to twelve months.  Girls may join at any time during the troop year.  Troops usually continue from year to year with the same group of girls.  This pathway is the way that the majority of our members enter and participate in the organization.  Through the troop pathway, girls often engage in other pathways throughout their Girl Scout experience.

Series
The series pathway is a sequence of linked sessions .  These sessions are usually related to a specific theme or purpose and feature cumulative, sequential, experiential learning.  Each girls chooses to participate in the entire Series as a complete program package.  Series experiences usually last (but not always) 6 to 8 sessions.  Three examples of the series pathway in action in Girl Scouts of Western Ohio are:

1. Volunteer Led Series allows girls to participate in 6 to 8 sessions, often in their school or community.  This is a popular way for older girls to participate because they can plan around their busy schedules.  It is also a great way for adults to volunteer with their daughter(s) in their community if they are unable to take on a long-term commitment.
2. CSA Association meets monthly to plan and implement events, service projects, and more.  Contact the Cincinnati and Toledo Girl Scout Centers for more information.
3. Girl Scouting During the School Day is available in all Girl Scouts of Western Ohio regions.  Girls participate for 8 sessions that are held at their school during their regular school day.  These sessions are offered in communities where there are barriers to traditional troops , and are lead by both staff and volunteers.  Call your regional office to see how you could get involved as a volunteer or how you could add girls to your troop from the participating schools.

Camp
Through the camp pathway, girls participate in Day and Resident Camp opportunities, which are focused on the out-of-doors and/or include a focus on environmental or outdoor education.

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio offers Day and Resident Camp opportunities at Camp Whip-Poor-Will and Camp Libbey.  Stay tuned for the 2011 Summer Camp Opportunities to be published on the council website in January.

Travel

The travel pathway offers girls leadership opportunities and cross-cultural understanding through local, regional, national, and international travel.  Girls prepare, plan, earn money, and participate through group travel, council-sponsored trips, or nationally-sponsored excursions.

In Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, girls can participate in the travel pathway through Destinations.  Destinations are sponsored by GSUSA in partnership with councils and community partners all over the United States and internationally.  Destinations are available for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors and usually are held during the summer months.  The following Destinations workshops are available for girls and adults to learn more.
